Tell us about yourself.
I'm currently leading the interventional cath service at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario. I was born in the US Midwest, moved to the East Coast for college and med school, and did my core pediatric cardiology and interventional fellowships at Boston Children's Hospital. I spent most of my career there, with 17 years on staff, including serving as Chief of Invasive Cardiology. In 2018 I decided to go back to school as a full time student and pursue a degree in health policy. I'm back in the cath lab now, and though I truly love taking care of patients, I feel like I've set myself up to for the next stage of my career by developing that other interest.
What are you most passionate about?
I love figuring stuff out. My 3 adult kids give me plenty of material on a daily basis. It's fun for me to learn new things or think about things in a new way. Maybe that's why I'm such a fan of puzzles--if given a quiet chunk of time alone, I'll be doing a crossword or jigsaw puzzle. I also love to read. Historical fiction is my favorite genre because it's equal parts learning history and getting to understand characters and narrative. I really dislike formal exercise, and only do enough to keep my back in good shape so I can stand in the lab for long cases and travel comfortably.
What would you like your colleagues to know about you?
I try. Often when involved in challenging clinical cases or in committee meetings, I'll suggest something that is way out there, or is just plain wrong. But most of the time, I'll try to come up with something. I also try hard for my patients. I always want to be able to tell parents that we tried just as hard as we could, even when the outcome isn't what we wanted. I think that's important. As a corollary, I have a lot of respect for other people who try. One of my favorite things is teaching pediatric cardiology and cath to someone who is really trying to learn it. Avid learners just propel you forward as a teacher. It's this terrific cycle where their efforts are rewarded by learning and performance, and that just makes them try harder. It's so gratifying.
