It's quite humbling to reflect on the journey that has led to where I am today. Serving as the Chairman & Chief Interventional Cardiologist at the Apex Heart Institute in Ahmedabad since August 2012 has been a privilege, building on my previous role as the Professor & Head of Cardiology at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad until October 2022. The opportunity to further expand my expertise as a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond and as a visiting professor at the Mayo Clinic has been incredibly enriching.
My focus in interventional cardiology has driven me to innovate in transradial interventions, robotic PCI, and distant telerobotic PCI, which have gained international recognition. Through TRICO (Transcatheter Intervention Course), an international training course on transradial techniques that I've conducted for the last 18 years, I've had the honor of training over 8000 interventional cardiologists globally. The three books I've authored and my contributions to research, including the "White Paper" on transradial intervention techniques for SCAI, have been instrumental in advancing knowledge in the field.
As Editor-in-Chief of www.trico.guru and a member of the editorial board in several reputed cardiology journals, I'm committed to disseminating knowledge and best practices. The design of catheters like the PAPA catheter and the VASO-catheter, holding patents in the United States and Europe, has been another significant contribution.
The recognition received, including awards like Dr. B. C. Roy award in 2007, the Padma Shri award in 2015, and most recently, the Padma Bhushan award in 2024 from the Honorable President of India, has been deeply gratifying and serves as a testament to the impact of my work in advancing the field of cardiology. Additionally, I have been awarded the Master Interventionist of SCAI (MSCAI) designation in 2024.
What are you most passionate about?
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my family, doing regular exercise and practicing meditation.
What would you like your colleagues to know about you?
On a personal note, I am a simple person who is open to discussing new ideas and challenges in cardiology with my peers and fellows. I don't like to keep anything up my sleeves, and that makes me most passionate about advancing this field.
