2024's July spotlight is Dr. Tanveer Rab! His question for the community is: You are in this world for a reason. How do you plan your journey as an interventional cardiologist and leave your mark in this world? Reply here.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a Professor of Medicine (Interventional Cardiology) at Emory University, recently honored as an MSCAI and host of the SCAI Bifurcation Club Webinar Series.
My training in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology was at Emory University and I have interests in treatment of patients with Left Main and Coronary Bifurcation Lesions, Cardiac arrest, Cardiogenic Shock, plaque modification with coronary atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy.
I live in Atlanta and am currently the Section Chief of Cardiology, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology at Emory Decatur Hospital.
What are you most passionate about?
Outside urban areas, particularly in rural communities there continues to be a high mortality rate from acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest and this will be worsened by the predicted shortage of cardiovascular specialists in the next few years. Access to care continues to be challenging. I am passionate about helping these communities. Six years ago, I co-authored a framework for creating cardiogenic shock care centers which would save lives as the average transfer of these patients to a tertiary hospital is > 2 days. My hope for rural communities is that we see more primary PCI centers, dedicated networks of cardiogenic shock care centers and more medical schools, enrolling rural candidates who in the future can better serve their communities and reduce disparities of care.
What would you like your colleagues to know about you?
I have always been a 'go getter' who gets the 'job done'. I am compulsive about the care of interventional patients and a stickler for quality outcomes. I believe there is no room for error. Over the years, I have been successful in building multiple programs for Emory Healthcare, whether it is interventional outreach or building a successful hospital based interventional program with good outcomes. I have been quick to embrace new technologies in interventional cardiology.
I am known for networking well with physician colleagues, locally, nationally and internationally and am thankful to the patients who placed their trust in me. I am approachable and I always make sure that my patients and physician colleagues can access me. For me patients come first!
