2024's December spotlight is Dr. Alex Truesdell! What they would like to know about the community is: I would love to know more about each of my community colleagues' individual (medical and non-medical) dreams and passions. Reply here

Tell us about yourself.

I am currently part of a large private practice cardiac group, Virginia Heart, in Northern Virginia, and work primarily out of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular Institute. On a day-to-day basis I work mostly in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (where I focus on complex coronary interventions and chronic total occlusions), the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (where I focus on acute cardiac emergencies and cardiogenic shock), and the outpatient office (where I focus on consultative interventional cardiology). I started my post-medical school training in General Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, but after 10 "gap years" in the Army as a medical officer in Intelligence, Infantry, and Special Operations units in Europe, the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan, I ultimately switched to fellowship training in general cardiology and interventional cardiology at Brown University in beautiful Providence, Rhode Island.

What are you most passionate about?

My professional passions center around the optimal management of cardiac emergencies and cardiogenic shock (particularly team-based and system-based care innovations) and the performance of complex coronary interventions in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (where I very much enjoy the increasing complexity of modern percutaneous intervention at a large regional referral center). On the personal side, my passions are my Wife and Children, our 3 Dogs (and our growing population of fish in our home aquarium). My favorite recreational activities are extended hiking and camping, live music, SCUBA and other beach and ocean activities, and world travel with my Family.

What would you like your colleagues to know about you?

My aspirational "third act" in life (after the Army and Medicine) is to work in the National Park Service.

What is your favorite quote?

One of my favorite quotes is "a team can achieve anything if no one cares who gets the credit." I heard and lived this mantra for many years during my time in the Army, and while I have no idea as to the original origin, it resonated with me then and it still does now today.
